2. Copy the font files (.ttf or .otf) to fonts:// in the File manager

How to install fonts on Mac OS?

Installing new fonts on your Mac is very easy:

1. Find the folder where you have fonts to be installed.

2. If the font file is inside an archive, unpack the font file using Stuffit Expander. If you are using Safari as your default web browser it will automatically extract a zip file and save it to Downloads folder.

3. Before installing fonts, you should close any open applications. For some applications, new fonts do not appear in the font menu if you install them while the application is open.

4. Double click on the font file you just extracted. This will open the font so you can preview it and if you like the font click Install Font. This will automatically install the font and you will able to see it in the Font Book.

– Under Mac OS X 10.3 or above (including the FontBook) : Double-click the font file > “Install font” button at the bottom of the preview.

– Under any version of Mac OS X: Put the files into /Library/Fonts (for all users), or into /Users/Your_username/Library/Fonts (for you only).

– Under Mac OS 9 or earlier: The old Mac fonts are not supported anymore at my font download site. First, you have to convert the font files (.ttf or .otf) you have downloaded. Then drag the fonts suitcases into the System folder. The system will propose you to add them to the Fonts folder.

– If the above instructions do not work just drag and drop extracted font file into the Font Book which is located under applications.

– Mac OS X recognizes TrueType and OpenType fonts (.ttf and .otf) but not the PC bitmap fonts (.fon).

Famous quotes on typography and words

Recently I came across a good selection of quotes on typography and words some of them are pretty interesting … Check them out below.

  1. The difference between the almost-right word and the right word is the difference between the lightning bug and the lightning!
    Mark Twain (1835-1910)
  2. Words are, of course, the most powerful drug used by mankind.
    Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936)
  3. “The Germans have a saying that you have to be on fire yourself to light one.
Many designers are driven by a special kind of dedication, both professionally
and personally. In addition to craft and creativity, bringing passion to the job
is the key to success. Passion gives us the power to act.
It is the foundation of change and of progress. ” – TYPO Berlin
  4. “For me, typography is a triangular relationship between design idea, typographic elements, and printing technique.” – Wolfgang Weingart (1941-)
  5. “Typography needs to be audible. Typography needs to be felt. Typography needs to be experiences. ” – Helmut Schmid, “Typography Today”, Idea mag.
The first proposal of designing letters on a Macintosh computer Hermann Zapf received as a gift from Steve Jobs, Apple Computer Corporation, Copertino, California in 1984.
  7. “I dip my pen in the blackest ink, because I’m not afraid of falling into my inkpot. ” – Jean Larcher
  8. “If this is calligraphy, then it is calligraphy without precedent. ” – Brody Neuenschwander
  9. “If you remember the shape of your spoon at lunch, it has to be the wrong shape. The spoon and the letter are tools ; one to take food from the bowl, the other to take information off the page … When it is a good design, the reader has to feel comfortable because the letter is both banal and beautiful.” – Adrian Frutiger
  10. “Typographical design should perform optically what the speaker creates through voice and gesture of his thoughts.” – El Lizzitsky
  11. “Lettering is a precise art and strictly subject to tradition. The ‘New Art’ notion that you can make letters whatever shapes you like, is as foolish as the notion, if anyone has such a notion, that you can make houses any shapes you like. You can`t, unless you live all by yourself on a desert island.” – Stanley Morison (1889-1967)
  12. “There is nothing simple or dull in achieving the transparent page. Vulgar ostentation is twice as easy as discipline. When you realize that ugly typography never effaces itself, you will be able to capture beauty as the wise men capture happiness by aiming at something else. ” – Beatrice Warde (1900-1969), “The Cristal Goblet”
